How to prepare a finished interior for a professional photo shoot

Brief the story as well as the address

Tell the photographer who designed or made the space, which decisions matter and where the photographs will be used. A joinery company may need to show storage in action; an interior designer may need to explain how two rooms connect.

Share recent reference pictures, any practical constraints and a shortlist of deliverables. For a London shoot commissioned from outside the UK, access, travel, crew and timings should be agreed explicitly rather than assumed.

Resolve what the lens will reveal

Glass, mirrors and polished surfaces reveal fingerprints, cables and unfinished edges. Check that lighting works, doors and drawers operate and the space is truly ready to represent the project. A postponement is often better than photographing incomplete joinery.

Styling should support the work rather than cover it. A few carefully selected objects can give scale and warmth; too many can hide the detail a prospective client came to see.

• Installation and final clean complete.
• Lighting and practical fittings tested.
• Personal items and loose cables removed.
• Access, permissions and key contacts confirmed.

Prioritise before adding extras

Make three lists: essential views, important details and optional creative frames. Capture the essential story first. If time remains, explore social crops, variations or moving shots within the agreed scope.

Confirm permission to photograph and publish the property, particularly where a private client, partner or recognisable personal detail is involved.

Leave with a usable library

Before the crew leaves, check whether there are suitable frames for the project page, campaign assets and portrait formats if requested. Capturing a lot is not the same as covering the intended uses.

After delivery, name and sequence the images by project. A clear library is easier for marketing, sales teams and collaborators to use consistently.
